The Link Between Fractions, Decimals & Percentages

The Link Between Fractions, Decimals & Percentages

Any  number can be written as a fraction, decimal or percent. The term percent is simply another name for hundredths. For example, 25% (twenty-five per cent) is the same as 25/100.

To multiply a decimal number by 10, simply move the decimal point one place to the right. To multiply by 100, move the decimal point two places to the right.

To divide the decimal number by 10, simply move the decimal point one place to the left. To divide by 100, move the decimal point two places to the left.

So, 25/100 is 25 divided by 100
25.0 becomes 0.25 (decimal point moves two places to the left)

Fractions, decimals and percentages are simply 3 different ways to write the same thing.

½  =  0.5  =  50%

It is sometimes necessary to change from one to another.
